Shota Imanaga, Porter Hodge injury update: Cubs pitchers make progress

Cubs manager Craig Counsell provided an update on Shota Imanaga before Friday’s game in Cincinnati. Shortly after Counsell spoke to the media, the star pitcher got some work in at Great American Ball Park.

Imanaga has been on the injured list with a hamstring strain since May 5, and Counsell told reporters on-site that his activity could progress soon.

“He had a heavy day today of throwing, so we’re targeting bullpens next week,” Counsell said. “Next Tuesday would be the first bullpen, assuming this weekend goes well.”

Counsell has previously stated that the Cubs will play it safe with Imanaga, their clear-cut ace. Rookie Cade Horton took Imanaga’s spot in the rotation and the Cubs have won each game that he has pitched.

The team also has high-leverage reliever Porter Hodge on the injured list dealing with a left oblique injury. The right-hander was placed on the injured list on Monday, and Counsell said he’s progressing well.

“We’re in a good spot,” Counsell said. “I really think this is similar to Ian’s situation. We’re getting good news, kind of, daily. It’s not gone but it’s getting less. That means we’re in a pretty good spot. We haven’t shut down any activity, so I think we’re trending in a good direction. We’ll have some more high intensity days when we get back to Wrigley next week, but all signs are good.”
