The latest on injured Cubs prospect Matt Shaw

2 weeks agoAndy Martinez

Matt Shaw is nearing a return to game action.

And a major-league debut in Japan isn’t out of the question yet.

“Nothing is off the table with Matt,” manager Craig Counsell told reporters on Thursday. “His first game is trending towards this weekend. We’re not at a point to make any decisions on Matt yet. He is getting healthy. essentially. Obviously, he’s playing in games, likely on Sunday, I think is the day we’re targeting for that.

“No decisions have been made [in regard to Opening Day].”

The Cubs top prospect entered camp as the front runner to win the vacant third base job for the team. But, on the first full squad workout, Shaw didn’t participate and his been out ever since with a left oblique injury.

But he’s confident he’s ready to get back to competing for the job at the hot corner.

“Honestly, at this point, I’m pretty much fully healed,” Shaw told Marquee Sports Network. “I’ve been here for two months, so I’m in a really good spot where I don’t have a lot of worries, I don’t think they have a lot of worries, kind of a fluke thing.

“Now, the position I’m in — we’re throwing, we’re hitting, we’re getting some live at-bats, playing in games the next few days, so I’m kind of in a great spot and I really have no anxieties or worries about this or anything like that.”

Shaw had begun to hit and take grounders, clearing those hurdles. Now, he’ll be playing in game action with just over 2 weeks before the team takes off for Tokyo to take on the Dodgers. If he isn’t ready to go, the Cubs have other internal options that could fill the role — Jon Berti, who was signed on a one-year deal this offseason, can play at third, Rule 5 Draft pick Gage Workman has manned the position in the minors, former top-100 prospect Vidal Bruján has experience there and non-roster invitee Nicky Lopez has played there, too.

“At the end of the day, your body is gonna tell you what you need,” Shaw said. “And right now, it’s just saying to work on some other things and get back to being healthy and not rushing anything. But right now, it’s feeling great. Ready to rock and roll pretty soon.”
