The record-setting Cubs offense continues their hot streak in sweep of Nationals
The Cubs offense hasn’t just been solid of late.
It’s been historic.
In their last 8 games entering Sunday, the Cubs had put up 80 runs on 98 hits with 43 extra-base hits, 18 stolen bases and 14 home runs. They were the first team in MLB history to reach all those numbers over an 8-game span. They continued their offensive prowess in a big way in the series finale in Washington D.C., racking up 14 runs on 18 hits as they swept the Nationals 14-1.
They picked up their second straight series sweep. It’s their 6th win in a row, their longest winning streak of the season and the first time they’ve been 5 games over .500 (71-66) since May 16. The Cubs completed their 9-game road trip 8-1, defiantly throwing themselves back into the playoff picture.

Sunday was much like the rest of the past nine games — a big rally made it a relatively comfortable day for the Cubs. Trailing early in the game, the Cubs raced out to a 4-1 lead thanks to some havoc created by Pete Crow-Armstrong.
They extended the lead on a Cody Bellinger RBI single and a 2-run single from Isaac Paredes.
Then, for the third time this week, the Cubs had a massive 9th inning. They sent 13 players to the plate, collected 7 hits and scored 7 runs in the final frame to put the game to rest. The Cubs had 6-run 9th innings twice this week — Monday they scored 6 in an 18-8 win over Pittsburgh and then Wednesday when they mounted an improbably 7-run rally to beat the Pirates 14-10.
Entering the season, the Cubs felt they had a chance to build upon an offense that scored the 6th-most runs in baseball last year. For much of the season, that hadn’t been the case — but this road trip has to give them confidence that they can continue to produce enough to keep chipping away in the NL Wild Card race.
