4 years agoTony Andracki

The Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament is off and running, where each Marquee Sports Network analyst gets a chance to put their team to the test.

We wrapped up the first round Thursday, with Elise Menaker facing off against Chris Myers while George Will and Sean Marshall went head-to-head.

The second round of the tournament begins Monday, June 8.

All matchup simulations were run by Strat-O-Matic, the market leader in sports simulations.

Myers vs. Menaker

Menaker Myers Matchup

FINAL: Menaker 9, Myers 6

Menaker went bold by choosing to bat her pitcher 8th and Andre Dawson 9th as a second leadoff hitter, but the strategy paid off in an offensive victory over Myers.

Team Menaker rapped out 12 hits, including 4 by Kris Bryant (who also scored 2 runs). Sammy Sosa drove in 3 runs while Ryne Sandberg and Gabby Hartnett each knocked in 2 runs. Sandberg, Hartnett and Ernie Banks all homered.

For Myers, Billy Williams stole the show out of the leadoff spot with 4 hits, including 2 homers. Myers actually carried a 6-4 lead going into the bottom of the 8th before Menaker’s squad put together a 5-run rally.

Myers’ version of Hartnett also had a huge game, going 3-for-3 with a homer, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored.

Both teams featured Greg Maddux as the starter and Lee Smith out the bullpen. Myers’ version of Smith was saddled with the loss, allowing 5 earned runs in 2 innings. Menaker’s Smith garnered the victory in 2.1 frames of work.

Menaker now moves on to the second round of the Ultimate Cubs Lineup Tournament next week.

Marshall vs. Will

Will Marshall Matchup

FINAL: Will 5, Marshall 4

After beating Pete McMurray in the play-in round, Marshall wasn’t able to move on to the second round despite 12 hits off Will’s pitching staff.

Rogers Hornsby, Banks and Williams all collected multiple hits for Team Marshall, including a homer and 3 RBI from Williams.

But Marshall’s closer, Aroldis Chapman, surrendered 3 runs in the bottom of the 9th inning to pick up the loss.

Will actually got out to a 2-0 lead before Team Marshall plated 3 runs in the top of the 8th and another tally in the top of the 9th.

In the bottom of the 9th, Dawson began the rally with a 1-out walk and scored on Sandberg’s game-tying 2-run shot. Phil Cavarretta followed and Hartnett followed with singles before Bill Nicholson smacked a walk-off single to plate Cavarretta.

After Fergie Jenkins kept Team Will in the game with 8 solid innings, Mordecai “Three Finger” Brown picked up the win in relief.

Will advances to the second round of the Ultimate Cubs Lineup tournament next week.
