Virtual Cubs stay hot, continue their dominance of Pirates
There’s no question Tuesday’s simulated Cubs game was “Kyle’s day.”
The only question is…which Kyle stole the show in a 4-1 Cubs victory?
As we continue our MLB The Show 2020 season, Kyle Schwarber put his virtual team on the board early with a 1st inning RBI double to plate Javy Báez. Schwarber later added a 2-run double in the 3rd inning and also scored the final run of the afternoon on a Jason Heyward sacrifice fly in the 8th inning.
But on the mound, Kyle Hendricks was just as important to the Cubs’ success. He allowed only 1 run in 7.1 innings, striking out 6 Pirates and improving to 2-0 on the season with a 2.18 ERA.
The Cubs are now 8-3 on the season, including a 4-1 record against the Pirates. With their third straight victory, the Cubs retained their spot atop the NL Central. (Side note: The St. Louis Cardinals are last in the division with a 1-10 record in this simulation…which should be a nice bit of levity for Cubs fans in these tough times.)
Hendricks departed the game with 1 out in the 8th inning and a runner on, but Dan Winkler came out of the Cubs bullpen and induced a double play to end the threat. Winkler, a veteran right-hander the Cubs added to the bullpen in the offseason, picked up his 5th hold of the season in the process.
Craig Kimbrel threw a perfect 9th inning and is now 4-for-4 in save situations and has yet to give up a run on the year.
Schwarber finished with 3 doubles and his 3 RBI push his season total to 8. Heyward’s sacrifice fly gives him 6 runs batted in this year.
Kris Bryant collected 2 hits atop the order to stay hot (his season average is now up to .295) while Báez went 2-for-3 with a walk and scored a pair of runs.
With Jason Kipnis struggling (.158 AVG), we inserted David Bote into the starting lineup at second base, but Bote went 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.
For the first time all year, we decided to give Willson Contreras a break behind the plate and Victor Caratini got an opportunity to catch a familiar battery mate in Hendricks (the two have worked together often over the past couple seasons). Caratini responded with his first hit of the year and also drew a walk while guiding Hendricks to another gem on the mound.
