Why Cubs decided to recall former top prospect Brennen Davis, place him on IL

1 year agoAndy Martinez

The injury bug continues to plague a former top prospect — and Friday it officially ended his season.

Outfielder Brennen Davis was recalled from Triple-A Iowa prior to Friday’s 9-5 loss to the Rockies and placed on the 60-day IL with a left ankle fracture. The move clears a 40-man spot for right-handed pitcher Jimmy Herget, who was claimed off waivers from the Braves. Herget was optioned to Iowa.

The Davis move was a procedural move more than anything. The Cubs 40-man roster was full and to add Herget to their roster, they either had to designate someone for assignment or move someone to the 60-day IL. Usually, teams are hesitant to place a prospect with no major-league experience on the 60-day IL because they accrue service time.

Davis, 24, suffered the injury on Tuesday with Triple-A Iowa, sliding into second base and was carted off the field. It’s been an injury-riddled last few seasons for a player that was the Cubs’ top prospect as recently as two years ago.

His injury problems started in 2022. He underwent back surgery for a vascular formation in June of that year and returned late in the season. He was participating in the Arizona Fall League but suffered back tightness that caused him to miss most of it.

The following year, he underwent core muscle surgery in June and hit .201 in 71 games.

Earlier this season, Davis suffered a fractured back and landed on the IL with Iowa.

Herget, 30, had a 4.38 ERA in 8 games (12.1 innings) for Atlanta this season. He has a career 3.54 ERA in parts of six seasons with Cincinnati, Texas, Anaheim and Atlanta.

Just two years ago, Herget was a solid reliever for the Angels. In 49 games, he had a 2.48 ERA with 6 holds and 9 saves in 69 innings.
