Willson Contreras’ message to Cubs fans

2 years agoTony Andracki

It has been an emotional week for Willson Contreras as he took in what may be his final moments at Wrigley Field in a Cubs uniform.

Fans showered the 3-time All-Star with cheers during his at-bats throughout Tuesday afternoon’s game, including game-stopping ovations in the 1st and 7th innings (his first and last at-bats).

After the win, the Cubs are departing Wrigley Field for a West Coast trip in San Francisco as a four-game series begins Thursday evening. Monday and Tuesday marked the final games at Wrigley Field before the trade deadline.

Contreras didn’t want to leave “The Friendly Confines” without a message to Cubs fans.

“I love you all,” he said in the on-field interview with Taylor McGregor postgame. “Thanks for everything. Thanks for everything you guys did for me, my family. I got a good relationship with some friends from Chicago and I’m pretty sure I’m gonna love it forever.

“Thank you for everything and I wish I could play for you guys, but this is a business. I understand that and love you all.”

Contreras shared a similar sentiment in the clubhouse shortly after the game as he met with the Chicago media.

“I have a lot of things in my head right now about the fans, but nothing but love,” he said. “…I would like to thank all the fans because the love and support they showed me from Day 1 is priceless. And they’re always gonna keep living in my heart.”
