Kerry Wood 20 Strikeout anniversary

4 years agoStaff Report

Bruce Levine, Ryan Sweeney and Jim Deshaies joined host Cole Wright on Cubs 360 Daily, presented by Miller Lite, to discuss the anniversary of Kerry Wood’s 20 strikeout performance against the Astros in 1998.

On this date 22 years ago, Kerry Wood pitched one of the greatest games of his career. He struck out 20 Houston Astros in a 1-0 victory on May 6, 1998.

“I remember that it wasn’t a big deal that day,” Levine said. “He had a couple of good starts up to that point, but nobody was expecting Kerry Wood at that point…..From what I remember was just the dominance of both pitchers. Shane Reynolds was dealing in the 1st inning and pitched a beautiful game himself. The first 8 batters all together struck out and I said ‘What is going on here?’ There was a feeling in the crowd that something special might happen that day.”

JD was in the broadcast booth with the Astros and recalled what he saw in the booth.

“We’d heard a lot about him. I was in the broadcast booth with the Astros in my second year working in television,” Deshaies said. “Every time you heard about Kerry Wood, you heard about Roger Clemens and Nolan Ryan. It was this lineage of hard throwing Texas right handers and Kerry Wood was going to be the next one to carry the freight for those power arms.”

Where were you on this day 22 years ago during Kerry Wood’s monumental performance?
