Should the Cubs build their roster around Kris Bryant for 2022 and beyond?

4 years agoStaff Report

There is plenty of first round talent on the Cubs roster and our Cubs 360 panel discuss whether the Cubs should continue to build their roster around Kris Bryant.

Bryant was the 2nd overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft and is under team control through 2021. With all the accolades that Bryant has received in his career, Len Kasper believed that Bryant is underrated.

“The reason is the bar he set and others set for him early in his career is so high, that he put up an OPS of over .900, second best on the Cubs roster last season. He is such a professional. He had some injury problems two years ago but basically plays everyday and has been incredibly durable in his career,” Kasper said. “I don’t think there is any question that the Cubs would love to keep him around and build around him for many years to come and have him be a Cubs until the day he retires. They know how great – not good – how great a player, a human being, a professional, a teammate Kris Bryant is.”

Bruce Levine mentioned that there’s not many “Kris Bryant type players” that you can have in your organization.

“Looking at 2021 and beyond, there’s the Kris Bryant side looking at it saying, ‘I need to get paid as one of the top performers in the game. I need to get paid many years and a lot of money and I’ll look at the team and decide whether or not you’ll have enough players with me there to be a championship caliber team.'”, Levine said. “On the team’s side, you have to look at it and say, ‘How many $30 million players can you afford on the team?’ You always should be in the direction of keeping the best players possible and the best citizens possible and certainly Bryant checks all of those boxes.”
