2020 MLB Draft: Cubs sign three more players

4 years agoTony Andracki

After agreeing to terms with 1st-round pick Ed Howard earlier this week, the Cubs have added three more names to their draft class.

Thursday afternoon, the club announced the signings of all three pitchers from the 2020 MLB Draft — 2nd rounder Burl Carraway, 4th rounder Luke Little and 5th round selection Koen Moreno.

Carraway — a left-handed pitcher — was the 51st overall selection in the Draft earlier this month. The Cubs believe he could make an impact in the big-league bullpen very soon.

Cubs vice president of scouting Dan Kantrovitz joined us on the Cubs Weekly Podcast and spoke glowingly of Carraway:

“He’s got a dominant and elite fastball-breaking ball combination,” Kantrovitz said. “It’s one that he could strike out major-league hitters today. It’s that good and that exciting and that electric.

“That being said, we’re not gonna rush him. There’s gonna be some things we want to work with him on, whether it’s consistency or pitch design, but he’s close. He’s really close. He’s an exciting, impact talent that I think we’ll be watching at Wrigley Field pretty soon.”

Little is a 6-foot-8 southpaw who went viral earlier this year with a fastball that clocked at 105 mph during a bullpen session.

The 19-year-old out of junior college (San Jacinto College North) struck out 86 batters in 44.1 innings over the past two seasons.

The Cubs are looking forward to getting him in their system and working with his big frame and big-time velocity.

“He’s gonna get an assessment in our Pitch Lab,” Kantrovitz said. “He’s gonna get a breakdown of mechanics and we’re gonna see what works for him and what doesn’t.”

Moreno is an 18-year-old right-hander out of Panther Creek High School in North Carolina. He was the 147th overall selection in the Draft.

The Cubs plan to take things slow with Moreno, but they love his fastball-slider-changeup arsenal.
