Caleb Williams says he’s fine after injury scare late in Bears loss to Cardinals
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Bears quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a bit of an injury scare late in Sunday’s 29-9 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, coming up hobbled on one of the game’s final plays.
Williams said he tweaked his ankle on the second-to-last play of the game, when he scrambled for a short gain. Then had it grabbed on next snap, which was a completed pass to Keenan Allen. He grabbed his leg while on the ground, then got up and limped to the sideline.

“I landed wrong. I just kind of tweaked it,” Williams said. “Then, on the last play, the dude grabbed my ankle and gator rolled. I tried to get off of it. When you stay on it, that’s when bad stuff starts happening with breaks and all that. So, I tried to just let my body go so I could fall and roll with it.”
Williams was walking fine coming through the tunnel and into the locker room. The team examined him shortly after that. They’ll do so again on Monday morning, though all seems to be fine with the No. 1 overall pick’s health.
“I’m okay,” Williams said.
There was some question about why Williams was still in the game at that point, with seconds remaining and an insurmountable deficit. Putting the backup in at stages of the game like that is specifically designed to prevent injury, and Williams was exposed to it.
“We were just getting work, getting timing under two-minute operation,” Eberflus said. “That’s what we were doing. The defense was out there, too, (late in the game).”
Williams didn’t think much of playing with victory out of reach.
“That’s not my decision,” Williams said. “You fight ‘til the end of the game if you’re in the game.”
