Bears CB Tyrique Stevenson didn’t start vs Cardinals, after role in loss to Commanders
GLENDALE, Ariz. – Bears cornerback Tyrique Stevenson was not in the starting lineup for Sunday’s game versus the Arizona Cardinals.
While head coach Matt Eberflus wouldn’t comment during the practice week about whether Stevenson would suffer a consequence for his actions on the fateful Hail Mary that sealed a 18-15 loss to the Washington Commanders, this temporary demotion is related to that event. NFL Network first reported the news.

Stevenson was caught on camera interacting with fans at Washington, with his back to the field as the ball was snapped. He wasn’t able to properly recover from the delayed reaction to the play and did not fulfill his assignment covering Washington receiver Noah Brown, who was wide open in the end zone and caught the touchdown pass, which was tipped by Stevenson. That wasn’t his assignment on the play, either, leading to a defensive breakdown that cost Chicago a victory.
NFLN also stated that Stevenson will rotate in with Terrell Smith during the course of the game, and that he’ll be an active participant in the contest. Exactly how much he’ll play is uncertain.
FOX Sports said that Stevenson left Wednesday’s practice after learning of his demotion and ESPN’s Courtney Cronin provided further context on the decision, stating that Stevenson had to temporarily leave practice but returned to the walk through after a couple minutes and there was no further confrontation from players or coaches.
