Cubs bolster roster depth as calendar flips to September

2 years agoAndy Martinez

The Cubs made a pair of roster moves Sunday morning as rosters expanded league-wide to 28 players in September.

The team recalled infielder Miles Mastrobuoni from Triple-A Iowa and activated left-handed pitcher Jordan Wicks off the 60-day IL. To make room on the 40-man roster for Wicks, infielder Nick Madrigal was recalled and placed on the 60-day IL with a left pinky fracture. Wicks will start Sunday’s finale in Washington.

Wicks, 25, has been on the IL since June 15 when he suffered a right oblique strain. The southpaw has made four rehab appearances with Triple-A Iowa, posting a 7.30 ERA in 4 starts, although those numbers are a bit misleading.

Rehab outings, especially the first few after significant time off, are more about health than results. He allowed 10 earned runs and 4 home runs in his first two appearances — which lasted 1.2 innings and 2 innings, respectively. But in his last two outings, he allowed just 4 hits in 8.2 scoreless innings with 8 strikeouts to 1 walk.

Wicks will likely be on some sort of pitch limit in his first major league outing in over 2 months. He is 1-2 with a 4.18 ERA and 1.46 WHIP in 7 games (6 starts) in the majors this season.

Mastrobuoni’s addition to the roster gives manager Craig Counsell another option on his bench. The 28-year-old provides some speed — he had 13 stolen bases in 14 attempts last year and is 15-for-16 with Iowa this season. Mastrobuoni also can play in the infield and corner outfield spots.

Recalling Mastrbuoni isn’t the flashiest option Cubs fans would have wanted — they currently have a plethora of their top prospects (infielders Matt Shaw and James Triantos, outfielders Owen Caissie and Kevin Alcántara and catcher Moisés Ballesteros) with Iowa.

But, of that group, only Alcántara is on the 40-man roster, and he has played just 20 games at the highest level of the minor leagues. The Cubs would have had to designate a player for assignment to clear another roster spot for one of those prospects and aren’t at the stage where they feel the desire to do that.

Mastrobuoni is being recalled with no clear path to playing time. The Cubs don’t want to call up a top prospect and have them sit on the bench with no trail to consistent playing time. And just because players were or weren’t called up on Sunday, doesn’t mean there won’t be more roster moves over the next month.

Last season, the Cubs brought up right-handed pitcher Shane Greene and outfielder Alexander Canario when rosters expanded. Greene was designated for assignment less than a week later and Canario was optioned 10 days later for Pete Crow-Armstrong.

Madrigal was optioned to Triple-A on June 2 and was hit by a pitch in his second plate appearance. He’s been out since. Madrigal was the Cubs’ Opening Day third baseman and hit .221 in 51 games this season.
