Cubs bolster roster with moves ahead of Marlins series

2 weeks agoTony Andracki

The Cubs continue to shake up their roster.

The day after swapping out several bullpen arms, the team activated a pair of veterans from the injured list.

Patrick Wisdom and Jameson Taillon both returned from their respective back injuries and were activated Thursday night. Taillon will start against the Marlins Friday at Wrigley Field.

In corresponding moves, Miles Mastrobuoni and Hayden Wesneski were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Taillon had a pair of rehab assignments over the last couple of weeks after missing most of Spring Training with the back strain.

The veteran right-hander was 8-10 with a 4.84 ERA in his debut season in Chicago last year but finished the year on a high note (3.38 ERA over his final 16 outings).

Wisdom, 32, was on the shelf with a back injury suffered during Spring Training.

The slugging infielder has been on a rehab assignment over the last week-and-a-half, where he demolished baseballs against Triple-A pitchers. In 9 games, he had a .407 average, .889 slugging percentage, 1.417 OPS with 4 doubles, 3 homers and 10 RBI.

He has been among the team leaders in homers in each of the last 3 seasons, hitting at least 23 dingers every year since 2021.

Wisdom will provide another right-handed bat as the Cubs are set to face several left-handed pitchers in the series with the Marlins this weekend at Wrigley Field.

The Cubs viewed Wisdom as a first baseman prior to his injury in Spring Training, envisioning a potential platoon with rookie Michael Busch. Busch has gotten off to a hot start and the Cubs also have the right-handed-hitting Garrett Cooper who can play first base and DH, so it remains to be seen exactly how the Cubs will slot Wisdom into the lineup.

Wisdom can also play third base and outfield and the Cubs have been utilizing the DH spot as a rotation so far this season.

Wesneski was called up prior to Wednesday’s finale in Arizona and stepped up big for the Cubs pitching staff with 4 shutout innings in relief. Mastrobuoni has received sporadic playing time this season, appearing in 8 games and going 0-for-12 with an RBI and pair of runs scored at the plate.
