Cubs ink 10 more 2023 Draft picks to deals

9 months agoTony Andracki

The Cubs continue to add young talent to their farm system.

On Wednesday, the team announced the signing of 10 more 2023 MLB Draft picks to deals, highlighted by 3rd round pick Josh Rivera and 4th round pick Will Sanders.

Rivera is a shortstop from the University of Florida who hit .348/.447/.617 with 19 homers and 18 stolen bases with the Gators.

The Cubs were impressed by his development year over year.

“Ike Ballou, our area scout, was tracking his progress all spring and noted at our beginning of the season scouting meetings that Josh really focused on improving his decision-making and just really his control of the strike zone,” Cubs VP of scouting Dan Kantrovitz said during the Draft. “Sometimes, when a player focuses on that, it doesn’t always come to fruition.

“But in the case of Josh, it was clear that some of the adjustments actually were substantial and meaningful and led to what ended up being one of the better seasons out there from a college shortstop.”

Sanders, meanwhile, is a right-handed pitcher out of the University of South Carolina. He had a 5.46 ERA in 2023 and struck out 11.1 batters per 9 innings working mostly as a starter.

The Cubs also inked their 7th rounder (SS Yahil Melendez), 12th rounder (2B Carter Trice), 14th rounder (RHP Grayson Moore), 15th rounder (RHP Ty Johnson), 16th rounder (LHP Daniel Brown), 17th rounder (LHP Ethan Flanagan), 19th rounder (RHP Nick Dean) and 20th rounder (3B Drew Bowser) to deals.

The Cubs signed 1st round pick Matt Shaw last week and the 13th overall pick was at Wrigley Field on Monday for the first time.

In total, the Cubs have signed 17 of their 20 draft selections, including 9 of their top 10 picks.
