Ryne Sandberg shared an unfortunate update with regards to his battle with prostate cancer.

The Cubs Hall of Famer took to Instagram Tuesday morning, saying:

“To my Chicago Cubs, National Baseball Hall of Fame, the city of Chicago, and all my loyal fans, I want to share an update on my prostate cancer. Unfortunately, we recently learned the cancer has relapsed and it has spread to other organs. This means that I’m back to more intensive treatment. We will continue to be positive, strong, and fight to beat this. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for me and my family.”

The Cubs released a statement in response, from chairman Tom Ricketts:

“Ryne is an inspiration to cancer survivors everywhere. I know all Cubs fans join my family and me in sending positive thoughts to Ryne and keeping him and his family in our prayers as he faces this next round of treatments to defeat cancer. Ryne has the heart and soul of a champion and that will serve him well in this challenge.”

It has been an up-and-down year for Sandberg. He announced his cancer diagnosis in January and then in June – on the 40th anniversary of “The Sandberg Game” – the Cubs unveiled a statue of the second baseman outside Wrigley Field.

And in August, Sandberg shared that he had undergone his final treatment for the disease, only to receive difficult news a few months later.

Cubs GM Carter Hawkins reacted to the news during Tuesday’s Winter Meetings media session:

“Our thoughts and prayers out to his family,” Hawkins said. “Obviously, they went through such a fight before this point and disheartening to hear the news today, but know that he’s gonna fight to get back to where he’s cancer-free and give everything he possibly can. With Ryno, he was in everyone’s living room for so long, right? I grew up going home and turning the TV on when I was in Atlanta. The Braves game wasn’t coming on till 7 o’clock, but you knew the Cubs are going to be on it at 2:20.

“With [Mark] Grace and Ryno and Shawon Dunston and that whole crew, it felt like we really knew those guys. And I think it makes it so personal for not just Cubs fans, but just baseball fans around the world. That’s got to be reinforcing for the Sandbergs. And they’ve been so great to the community and I know that the community has been so great back to them.”
