Matt Eberflus non-committal on Shane Waldron, clear on Caleb Williams

LAKE FOREST, Ill. – Head coach Matt Eberflus said on Monday afternoon that the Bears are in the process of evaluating possible changes to help get the offense back on track.

Eberflus did say that changes will be made, but didn’t get any more specific than that.

The most obvious is a switch at play caller, a job currently held by offensive coordinator Shane Waldron. Eberflus wouldn’t say whether Waldron would be on the staff or in his current role later this week.

There was one possible change Eberflus shut down quickly.

He was asked if quarterback Caleb Williams’ status might change.

“No,” Eberflus said. “Caleb is our starter.”

That seems like an insane notion, to demote a No. 1 overall pick who has shown he can do special things. Like the offense, Williams hasn’t played as well over the past three weeks. His numbers are down, his timing seems occasionally off and he’s getting sacked a ton.

He was sacked nine times by New England and 38 times overall. That’s the highest total in the league to this point.

Williams’ development is the most important thing in a 2024 season where the Bears don’t make the postseason. Progress requires reps and a solid infrastructure around him.

There may be changes to that operation. Eberflus had a chance to back Waldron on Monday, to commit to him being around as the Bears prepare for a home game versus Green Bay. He wouldn’t do it, same as Sunday night.

“The process of that, we’re going through that right now,” Eberflus said. “All those adjustments and changes and things that we’re gonna do – we’re still in the evaluation phase of that.”

That extends the Waldron storyline another day at least, probably more. The Bears must also focus on Green Bay prep and need to know who’s going to be calling plays and leading the game-plan effort.

“There will be changes, adjustments, being made,” Eberflus said. “I’m not going to disclose those right now. I’m not at that point in the process. Monday is a long day in terms of the evaluation of everything, in terms of lineups, in terms of the coaching, in terms of how we need to do better in that coaching and in that communication in-game, during the game, after the game, prior to the game, so it’s important that we take time to make those decisions and make the right decisions that’s for the Bears, best for the Bears going forward this week and going forward into the future.

“That’s the most important thing that we do, that we have some steadiness here, but also make the necessary adjustments and changes that we need to make, what’s best for the Bears going forward.”
