Bears fan who shared Ben Johnson note to Kevin Warren recounts story
Bears president and CEO Kevin Warren is all class.
You may have heard the story by now of a fan passing Kevin Warren a note that read “Kevin, please hire Ben!!”. Warren told the story on Wednesday after the Bears introduced Ben Johnson as their 19th head coach in franchise history.
On Thursday, the fan — Jerry Stein — who sent that note went on 670 The Score to recall the events from his perspective.
The fan and his girlfriend went out to Old Pueblo Cantina — in Lincoln Park — on Saturday evening to watch the Lions vs. Commanders Divisional playoff game — one that ironically featured the future Bears head coach.
“It was this last Saturday when the Lions were playing the Commanders. So, you know, we wanted to go watch the game,” Stein said, “And we go and we sit at the bar and I look over and there’s Kevin Warren in his three-piece suit, which kind of sealed the deal for me. I knew that was Kevin Warren.”
“My girlfriend was actually the one with the idea who said, ‘You know, we should send him a drink,’” Stein added. “I said, ‘All right, if we’re going to do that, let’s send him a note too.’”
The couple sent over two shots of Don Julio tequila to Warren, who in turn sent a pair of shots back to the couple.
“The bartender said, ‘Here’s two shots from the couple down at the end of the bar,’ referring to Kevin Warren, “They looked over (and) cheers’d to us,” Stein said.
