Shane Waldron is out as Bears offensive coordinator, Thomas Brown to call plays
The Bears have relieved Shane Waldron of his duties, the team announced on Tuesday morning.
Offensive passing game coordinator Thomas Brown will call plays moving forward.
This switch comes on the heels of a 19-3 loss to the New England Patriots, which was the team’s third straight defeat. The Bears offense has been awful in that span, with 27 points scored and an current streak of eight quarters without scoring an offensive touchdown.

“After evaluating our entire operation, I decided that it is in the best interest of our team to move in a different direction with the leadership of our offense. This decision was well-thought-out, one that was conducted deliberately and respectfully,” head coach Matt Eberflus said in a statement. “I would like to thank Shane for his efforts and wish him the best moving forward.”
Waldron was hired on Jan. 22 and called just nine games for the Bears. His offensive scheme was producing quality results from Weeks 4-6, when the Bears were on a roll and scoring touchdowns with regularity. Poor play sandwiched that stretch, but the offense has clearly regressed to the point that the Bears could hardly move the ball against New England.
The timing is off. The protection is poor and quarterback Caleb Williams is struggling with both accuracy and decision making.
The Bears’ season is on the brink, with the team at 4-5 entering a brutal stretch that features six NFC North games and contests against the 49ers and Seahawks.
Brown has experience calling plays. He was offensive coordinator at the University of Miami from 2016-18 and was Carolina Panthers OC last season. He interveiwed for the Bears OC job earlier this year that was given to Waldron.
“Thomas is a bright offensive mind who has experience calling plays with a collaborative mindset,” Eberflus said. “I look forward to his leadership over our offensive coaching staff and his plan for our players.”
