Injury misfortune continues for Kris Bryant as he exits Monday’s game early

4 years agoAndy Martinez

Kris Bryant’s bad injury luck continued Monday night.

Bryant left the game against the Pirates in the 3rd inning with right lower oblique tightness. He suffered the injury during his first at-bat of the game in the 2nd inning. He finished the at-bat, as he grounded out to third and played the bottom half of the second defensively before he exited the game.

“He’s day-to-day,” David Ross said after the game. “He was pretty emotional underneath. It’s a unique year and he’s dealt with a lot.”

Monday’s injury is the latest in a tough season for Bryant. Ross has tried to remain upbeat throughout his injury-laden season.

“He’s just been dealing with a lot this year injury-wise, trying to get going,” Ross said. “I try to look at the positive in this seat in every aspect. He did finish the at-bat, so that’s a positive and he felt like he could finish the AB, felt like he could go out and play defense.”

Bryant played the last half inning defensively to give David Bote, his replacement at the hot corner, some time to warm up.

“It was nice of him to go out and play D,” Ross said. “David’s been dealing with some stuff. It was kind of positive that he could still feel like he could do a little bit.”

Ultimately, Ross, Bryant and the Cubs didn’t want to risk it any further with the playoffs looming just a week away.

“Another at-bat and something serious happens and then he [could be] done for the season,” Ross said. “We’ll see how it goes tomorrow, but I try to hold out hope.”
