Javy Báez turns in another magical romp around the basepaths
El Mago strikes again.
Javy Báez has managed to steal runs for the Cubs in back-to-back games.
On Sunday, he scored from second base on a sacrifice fly when the Brewers defense fell asleep.
Tuesday night, he added a huge insurance run late when he motored all the way around from first base on a strikeout.
As Jason Heyward swung and missed, Báez stole second base. The throw wound up in center field, and Báez popped up out of his slide quickly and scampered for third base.
As he approached, Cubs third base coach Will Venable continued to quietly wave his arms and Báez turned on the jets to score an all-important run in the bottom of the 8th inning. It caught the Indians by surprise and forced a rushed throw that sailed well wide of home plate.
“I wasn’t thinking of trying to score on that but after the ball went into the outfield, it was time to improvise,” Báez said.
“When Javy gets on, he can definitely cause chaos running around the bases, that’s for sure,” David Ross said.
Báez also homered earlier in Tuesday night’s game.
