London Series 2020 called off
The London Series between the Cubs and Cardinals has been canceled by Major League Baseball.
MLB commissioner Rob Manfred informed MLB employees about the cancelation in a memorandum sent to them on Wednesday.
The Cubs and Cardinals were scheduled to play two games at the Olympic Stadium. It was part of a two-year deal to host baseball games in the English capital. The Red Sox and Yankees played two games in London in June of last year, with the Yankees sweeping the Red Sox.
“We made the decision because it was unlikely the events would go forward, and timely cancellation allowed us to preserve important financial resources,” Manfred said in the memorandum. “We also have canceled agreements with service providers and delayed projects that involve large capital expenditures.”
The sports cancelations are prevalent in England, too. The All England Club announced the cancellation of Wimbledon for the first time since World War II on Wednesday. England’s soccer league, the Premier League, has been suspended until at least April 30.
It’s the third international series canceled already. The Padres and Diamondbacks were scheduled to play on April 18-19 in Mexico City and the Mets were to play the Marlins on April 28-30 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
