NFL rumors: Bears expected to acquire Joe Thuney in trade with Chiefs

9 months agoScott Bair

The Bears are aggressively upgrading their offensive line.

Chicago reportedly acquired veteran guard Jonah Jackson from the Los Angeles Rams on Tuesday, and now is expected to add two-time All-Pro guard Joe Thuney in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Athletic’s Dianna Russini was first to report the Thuney trade talks Wednesday morning, and news quickly developed after that.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport then cited sources in reporting that the Bears are expected to trade for Thuney, and ESPN’s Adam Schefter added, via a source, that Chicago is giving up a 2026 fourth-round draft pick in the deal.

Thuney, who will turn 33 next season, is scheduled to make a $15.5 million base salary, per OverTheCap.com, which the Bears have room to absorb. It will be the final year of Thuney’s current contract.

Thuney has played numerous positions along the O-line but primarily worked at guard. He’s versatile enough to play tackle, as he did during the Chiefs’ Super Bowl run, but he likely would play inside in Chicago. This deal would revamp the Bears’ line and turn it into a team strength, with Thuney and Jackson inside and Braxton Jones and Darnell Wright at tackle.

If the Bears officially can land Thuney, they would make good on their effort to build up the team around quarterback Caleb Williams. They have made major adds to their biggest positional weakness without losing their top NFL draft capital, which includes the No. 10 overall pick and two early second-round selections at Nos. 39 and 41.

Bears general manager Ryan Poles is familiar with Thuney, as he was the Chiefs’ executive director of player personnel in 2021 when they signed Thuney to a five-year, $80 million contract as a free agent. Thuney started his NFL career with the New England Patriots, who selected him in the third round of the 2016 NFL draft, and he won two Super Bowls with them, then two more in Kansas City.
