Teaming up to stop the spread: doctors and charities come together

4 years agoKarli Bell

Throughout the country, there are hundreds of thousands of first responders on the frontline, fighting COVID-19 and helping patients suffering from this virus. Community members, including right here in Chicago, have also stepped up to serve others. We at Marquee Sports Network want to recognize all of these Hometown Heroes for their efforts.

Nonprofits and charity organizations have stepped up to the plate during these trying times, including one organization on the South Side of the city called Who Is Hussain. They teamed up with a local chiropractor at Body Genesis Sport and Spine Dr. Solomon Liburd to find a way to give back.

You don’t have to be on the front lines but there was something that we could do to stop this spread,” Dr. Liburd said.

Wali Rizvi, Who Is Hussain Chicago Chapter President, said, “The common person is looking for one to three masks. We decided to help the common man.”

Over a two-week span, they gave away 15,000 masks to Chicagoans in the 4th Ward.

“Us being able to come together like this, It was such a fulfillment to see our parking lot full of cars. There were people from different income levels, people who were very needy, they can’t afford a mask. It’s not like they’re expensive. They’re just hard to find. You can’t find it,” Dr. Liburd said.

They plan on continuing efforts dependent on progress to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“As the challenge ensues, we are able to rise to it,” Rizvi said.
