Cubs’ Dansby Swanson shares surprising secret behind recent hot streak
CHICAGO — Dansby Swanson has been on fire.
And he has a teammate to thank for it — well, sort of.
At the start of last week’s road trip in Pittsburgh, Chicago Cubs manager Craig Counsell bumped Swanson down to the No. 8 spot in the batting order. As a result, hot-hitting catcher Carson Kelly slid up to the middle of the lineup.

At that point, Swanson was hitting .181 with a .577 OPS on the season. Since then, the Cubs shortstop has been on a tear, hitting .462 with a 1.366 OPS in the last seven games.
That includes a three-hit, two-RBI night Monday during the Cubs’ 9-2 win over the San Francisco Giants.
And the reason behind it all?
Red Bull.
Yep, the popular energy drink.
“Ever since Nicky Lopez got here, he gives me, like, a little quick swing of his Red Bull,” Swanson said. “I don’t ever drink Red Bull. But I said one day, ‘You know what? Sure.’
“And that’s been the difference.”
The Cubs actually added Lopez to the roster before the road trip, when they signed him on April 23. But Swanson said he started drinking some of Lopez’s Red Bull in Pittsburgh.
And the results immediately followed.

Of course, there are plenty of other more baseball-centric reasons behind Swanson’s turnaround at the plate.
“Realistically, a lot of it has just come down to really trusting in a good process again,” Swanson said. “Trusting in stuff I’m doing pregame and getting ready for the game. Obviously, I give a lot of credit to hitting guys, just kind of keeping me locked in and getting me to a good place to have good at-bats and do what I can help us win.”
Swanson said he also has taken a step back and reminded himself that he has a long track record of offensive success at this level and to trust in the process. He is a two-time All-Star who has averaged 23 homers, 83 RBI and a .747 OPS over the last four seasons entering 2025.
“We knew Dansby was going to hit a hot streak,” Cubs left fielder Ian Happ said, “and the last week or so, it’s been pretty impressive.”
