Ryan Pressly makes his pitch for Alex Bregman to join Cubs

The Cubs are starting to look like the Astros North, in some ways, now that two star players (Kyle Tucker, Ryan Pressly) have both relocated from Houston to Chicago this offseason.

So why not keep the trend rolling?

During his introductory press conference with Chicago media Wednesday, Pressly was asked if he would be lobbying for star free agent third baseman Alex Bregman to join the Cubs.

The Astros cleared salary in the Pressly deal, so the possibility of re-signing Bregman became a lot more likely this week.

But as of Wednesday afternoon, Bregman was still a free agent. And the Cubs have reportedly had interest in the slugger if he decided to take a shorter-term deal, as Bruce Levine reported Wednesday on Audacy.com.

“Obviously, I would love to play with Breggy,” Pressly said. “He’s one of those guys that you have in the clubhouse that, man, all he wants to do is win. He doesn’t care where he’s at. And that’s one thing that I love about him. He was the heartbeat of that clubhouse in Houston.”

Bregman was a mainstay in the Astros lineup during Pressly’s entire 7-year tenure in Houston. They made the postseason each year, including winning the World Series in 2022.

The 30-year-old is a 2-time All-Star and won the Gold Glove in 2024. He has also earned AL MVP votes in 4 seasons, including finishing 2nd in 2019.

The Cubs currently have an opening at third base after trading Isaac Paredes to the Astros in the Tucker deal last month.

Top prospect Matt Shaw could wind up taking that third base job and running with it and the Cubs have other options at the position, including veteran infielder Jon Berti and Rule 5 pick Gage Workman.

But Bregman would be a clear upgrade if the Cubs were able to make another splash this winter.

“Having him come to Chicago would be an amazing thing for us,” Pressly said. “However, I don’t know exactly what’s going on in his camp. Me personally, I would love to play with him again, just because he’s a solid dude and a great teammate. And his kid plays with my kids and our wives are close friends.

“Having another familiar face on the team would be super helpful and that left side of the infield would be really, really good. I still think we’re really good with or without him signing, but again, I would love to have him with us in Wrigley.”
