Bears legend Charles Tillman goes viral with reaction to Purdue’s ‘Peanut Punch’ drill
Charles Tillman will always be better known as ‘Peanut’, a nickname given to him as a baby because he was so small.
That nickname stuck with him throughout his football career. The Bears legend, who earned two Pro Bowl selections and helped lead the team to Super Bowl XLI in his 12 seasons in Chicago, was famous for what was deemed the ‘Peanut Punch‘: a fumble-forcing maneuver achieved by punching the ball out of a ball carrier’s hands while he’s headed for the ground.

Now, collegiate teams are using Tillman’s namesake move in practice. When the Purdue University football team posted a video of players working on the Peanut Punch, by having players punch a football out of a rolling tackle rings, Tillman was honored. His reaction garnered nearly 3 million views and 50,000 likes on X, formally known as Twitter.
“You changed the game lowkey. Don’t forget that,” one user wrote in the replies.

His unique way of taking the football away will always be remembered by Bears fans. The NFL did not forget it, either. In 2022, the league’s officiating body made the Peanut Punch an official in-game technique due to ‘an uptick’ in its use.
Tillman forced 44 fumbles in his career, tying him for sixth all-time in the NFL. The former cornerback is a multiple-time Pro Football Hall of Fame nominee, and will hope to one day add on to the 34 Bears enshrined in Canton, Ohio.
