Golden State selects Sky’s María Conde in expansion draft
Chicago Sky forward María Conde will be heading to the West Coast as she was selected by the Golden State Valkyries in the WNBA expansion draft. Conde was drafted by the Sky in the 3rd round of the 2019 Draft but has yet to play a single game in the WNBA; she’s spent all of her professional career playing overseas and for the Spanish National Team.
Here’s where the Golden State Valkyries roster stands after the expansion draft:
Guards: Kate Martin (LV), Veronica Burton (CT), Carla Leite (DAL), Julie Vanloo (WASH)
Forwards: Kayla Thornton (NY), María Conde (CHI), Stephanie Talbot (LAS), Cecilia Zandalasini (MIN), Monique Billings (PHX)
Centers: Iliana Rupert (ATL), Temi Fagbenle (IND)
Now mind you, this is not the final roster. Golden State can waive any of these players before the end of 2024 to avoid a hit on their salary cap. They can also trade any of these players once free agency negotiations begin in the new year.
The Sky now have the following players on contract for the 2025 season: Elizabeth Williams, Moriah Jefferson, Rachel Banham, Lindsay Allen, Kamilla Cardoso and Angel Reese.
Chennedy Carter, Dana Evans and Michaela Onyenwere are restricted free agents while Diamond DeShields, Isabelle Harrison and Brianna Turner are unrestricted free agents.
With the expansion draft over, all eyes are set on the new year with contract negotiations beginning on Jan. 21 before free agency starts on Feb. 1. The Sky also currently have the No. 3 and No. 10 picks in the 2025 WNBA Draft which is set for April 14.
