New head coach Marsh wanting to see selflessness out of 2025 Chicago Sky
“This felt like the right place to be.”
The Chicago Sky formally introduced Tyler Marsh, their 4th head coach in as many years, at Wintrust Arena on Nov. 12 where players Rachel Banham, Elizabeth Williams and general manager Jeff Pagliocca sat beside the new face of the team.
Marsh brings over 10 years of coaching experience in the NBA, NBA G-League and WNBA in player development and won championships at each level. His work specifically with Las Vegas Aces guard Jackie Young brought a spotlight onto what he can do on the offensive side of the ball. With two building block rookies in Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso on his roster, he’s already got a plan in place.
“We want to continue to highlight their strengths,” Marsh said. “We also want to continue to improve and figure out ways to where they can score easily or they can still be effective defensively.
“I think it’s important to understand though, that even though they’re kind of the cornerstones of this franchise, that championship teams are 1 through 12. Everyone has a huge part to play. Everyone has value. Everybody brings value. Doesn’t matter how many minutes you play.”
While supporting their two biggest post players is a priority, Marsh’s offensive mindset also wants to bring in shooters.
“I told Rachel [Banham] and Michaela [Onyenwere] in our first conversations, when you have it, I want you to feel the confidence of letting it ride,” Marsh said. “That goes for everyone. Elizabeth [Williams], we’re going to get you shooting some threes too.”
Bringing in the right pieces to support Reese and Cardoso will be crucial for a 2025 Chicago Sky team who will have two first round draft picks with one being a top 4 pick. Free agency will also play a factor with a majority of free agents most likely only signing one year contracts due to players opting out of their current Collective Bargaining Agreement. Regardless of who Marsh and Pagliocca bring in, their focus is on selflessness.
“We want to have the right balance of passion,” Marsh said. “We want to have the right balance of work ethic. We want to be able to take and receive criticism, be able to give it in a positive way. We want to speak life into one another.”
Who the Sky will add remains to be seen, but they will have an idea of where they will draft after the WNBA draft lottery on Sunday, Nov. 17. The draft lottery is set for 4 p.m. on ESPN.
