Weatherspoon brings 30+ years of basketball experience as a player and coach. She spent the last 4 seasons with the Pelicans as an assistant.
Weatherspoon spent the last four years in the New Orleans Pelicans organization, first as a player development coach in 2019 before becoming an assistant in 2020. She also was the head coach of her alma mater, Louisiana Tech, going 99-71 over six seasons at the program she brought a national championship to in 1988.
Weatherspoon is one of the original players in the WNBA when she joined the New York Liberty in the league’s inaugural season in 1997. She wrapped up her playing time in the league with one season with the Los Angeles Sparks in 2004.
During her WNBA career, she was 2-time Defensive Player of the Year, 5-time WNBA All-Star and 4-time WNBA second-team honoree. To top it off, she was a part of the US Olympic team in 1988 and 1992, bringing home gold and bronze medals respectively.
The Sky announced at the end of the 2023 season that they were not retaining interim head coach/general manager Emre Vatansever after former head coach/general manager James Wade left in July to join the Toronto Raptors organization as an assistant.
Chicago now has their new head coach as well as their 2021 Finals MVP Kahleah Copper staying with the organization after signing a contract extension. Next up: who will be the new general manager of the Sky?
