Courtney Vandersloot reacts to breaking wife Allie Quigley’s Sky record

When Courtney Vandersloot became the Chicago Sky’s all-time leading scorer Thursday night, she did it under pretty special circumstances.

The player Vandersloot surpassed for the lead was none other than her wife, Allie Quigley.

“For me to pass my wife, it speaks to our commitment together to this franchise,” Vandersloot told media after the Sky’s 97-92 win over the Dallas Wings. “She spent (fewer) years here than I did — she’s a scorer and deserves this record.”

Vandersloot needed just nine points to break Quigley’s record of 3,723 points. She finished the win with 13, slotting herself into the top spot on the Sky’s leaderboard with 3,728 points.

“What it means to me the most is my time spent here,” Vandersloot said. “It speaks to the commitment that I made to the Chicago Sky, and their commitment to me as well. They drafted me, let me develop and it wasn’t always easy — we had a lot of tough seasons.”

At 36, Vandersloot has spent most of her 15-year career with the Sky, who drafted her No. 3 overall out of Gonzaga in 2011. She led the team to its first WNBA championship in 2021, then signed with the New York Liberty in 2023 and won the 2024 WNBA title with them. She returned to the Sky this year in free agency.

She and Quigley were Sky teammates from 2013 until the latter’s retirement in 2022. They were married in 2018. Quigley, a Joliet, Ill., native, played her college basketball under Doug Bruno at DePaul University.

Vandersloot didn’t want to gloat at all over the milestone, but she poked fun at her and Quigley’s lighthearted rivalry.

“I try not to get attached to individual records, because records are meant to be broken, and this one will be,” Vandersloot said. “But if anyone’s going to beat it, she’s glad it’s me.”
