WNBA can’t substantiate racist fan behavior claim at Sky vs Fever game

3 weeks agoKyle Millinowisch

The WNBA announced Tuesday it had concluded its investigation into alleged racist fan behavior during the May 17 Chicago Sky-Indiana Fever season opener in Indianapolis and that “we have not substantiated it.”

The WNBA’s statement read, in part: “Based on information gathered to date, including from relevant fans, team and arena staff, as well as audio and video review of the game, we have not substantiated it. The WNBA is committed to fostering a safe and inclusive environment for everyone and will continue to be vigilant in enforcing our fan code of conduct.”

Both teams released statements in which they thanked the WNBA for investigating the matter.

The league probed racial comments allegedly directed at Sky star Angel Reese by fans during the game at Gainbridge Fieldhouse, and Fever star Caitlin Clark supported the investigation.

“There’s no place for that in our game, there’s no place for that in society,” Clark told reporters last week. “Certainly, we want every person who comes into our arena — whether player or fan — to have a great experience. I appreciate the league doing that. I appreciate that the Fever organization has been at the forefront of that.”

Sky star Angel Reese also commented on the situation at a practice last week.

“Obviously, there’s no place in this league for that. I think the WNBA and our organization have done a great job supporting me,” Reese said. “I’ve had communication from so many people across this league. … This whole process, it could happen to anyone.”

The Sky and Fever will meet again June 7 at United Center, but Clark will miss the game because of an injury.
